GSTR analysis in support of re-licensing

Neutronics and Thermal-Hydraulics Analysis in Support of Re-Licensing the USGS TRIGA Reactor (GSTR)

Modern neutronics and thermal-hydraulics models for re-licensing the USGS TRIGA reactor in Denver.

The U.S. Geological Survey TRIGA Reactor (GSTR) at the Federal Center in Denver has been shut down since an aluminum-clad fuel element failed. Re-licensing by the NRC needs an updated safety analysis report with new fuel configurations.

We are compiling a reference document that ties every model parameter to its source. We are porting the existing MCNP model to a modular OpenMC model and comparing the two codes. With Mines mechanical engineering, we are also reviewing the thermal-hydraulics safety basis.
