Real-time 3-D time-dependent neutron kinetics

Real-time 3-D Time-Dependent Neutron Kinetics Framework

Monte Carlo-level accuracy for 3-D reactor transients, 1,000× faster.

We develop algorithms and applications for real-time, high-fidelity neutron kinetics, built on the hybrid transient fission matrix (TFM) method. The method solves the 3-D time-dependent neutron transport equation with Monte Carlo-level accuracy.

Our framework is a Python/C++ solver coupled to OpenMC. It solves for k-effective, the fission source, and neutron importance, and runs 3-D transients with control-rod motion. We are also building fission-matrix tallies into OpenMC itself.

Recent work propagates Monte Carlo tally uncertainties through fission-matrix solutions and tests how the JSI TRIGA rod-insertion transient depends on rod timing and speed. With JSI and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, we are starting to model TRIGA pulses.
